LL Cool J You And Me (feat Kelly Price) (Def Jam) 2000

Love him or hate him, this guy has to be the most succesful rap artists of all time. He's been in the game longer than anyone I can think of? This was an album that he called 'GOAT' for some strange reason...(Greatest Of All Time) The usual soulful rap crossover but the 'Hi Gloss' loop he raps over is wicked. Features Kelly Price as well.

KRS-One MC's Act Like They Don't Know (Jive) 1995

So the blog's supposed to be soul...most good music has soul and this record is no exception. KRS ONE is one of the legendary rappers from the old school rap era. I remember listening to his old skool stuff such as 'Poetry' and 'South Bronx' back in the 80's. On 'MC's Act Like They Don't Know ' he teams up with arguably one of the best hip hop producers of all time 'DJ Premier' and the results are devastating! The rhythm track just blew me away on this track when I first heard it. KILLER TUNE.

Brothers Johnson Strawberry Letter 23 (A&M) 1977

This is an amazing record. Tarantino got it spot on when he put this in the movie 'Jackie Brown' This sums up every reason I love 1970's soul/funk music. Lalah Hathaway also seems to have borrowed the chimes sound in her classic 'Baby Don't Cry'

De La Soul Say No Go (Tommy Boy) 1989

I love De La Soul, these were such good times. These guys were the absolute masters of sampling, cutting up dozens of tunes on their classic album 3 Feet High and Rising. 'Say No Go' samples Daryl Hall and John Oates' classic 'I Can't Go For That' amongst other tracks such as 'Let Me Take You In My Arms' by the Detroit Emeralds. Reminisce...

Daryl Hall & John Oates I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) (RCA) 1981

Yes I'm thinking the same as well but it's not about the cover. One of the best basslines you'll ever hear. There's a reason tunes like this get sampled..

Minnie Riperton Adventures In Paradise (Epic) 1975

Without doubt one of my favourite albums of all time. Minnie Riperton has the voice of an angel and you can literally feel every word she sings. This has the classic tune 'Inside My Love' and also 'Baby, This Love I Have' which was sampled by A Tribe Called Quest and other great moments. This used to be quite expensive as a Japanese import but is now available for under £3 on Amazon along with her 'Perfect Angel' album on the same disc! This is an absolute must..
